The heart of the neighbourhood

Via Sestri, a walk among shops and historic buildings

Via Sestri runs through the neighbourhood centre for around 700 metres. Pedestrianised for several decades, it has become western Genoa's main destination for shopping and strolling: a place to enjoy on foot among shop windows, cafés and everyday services.

Then and now

The same street, an ongoing story

The period photograph preserves a view of Via Sestri when tram tracks still crossed the street. The tram service remained in operation until the 1960s; before receiving its current name, the road was officially known as Via Garibaldi between 1885 and 1926. Today its historic buildings continue to frame the pedestrian promenade.

A green pause

Villa Rossi Martini, Sestri's park

Villa Rossi Martini's park covers 40,425 square metres and is considered the green lung of the neighbourhood. Landscape designer Giuseppe Rovelli created it in the English style, with a broad lawn and mature pines, cedars, holm oaks, cypresses and palms.

Genoese flavours

Local flavours to try

Focaccia and farinata are a delicious starting point for discovering Genoa’s rich food tradition.

Genoese focaccia

Soft inside, golden and lightly crisp on top, with olive oil and coarse salt held in its characteristic dimples. In Genoa it is also eaten for breakfast, often with a cappuccino, but it is delicious at any time of day.

Chickpea farinata

Made with chickpea flour, water, extra virgin olive oil and salt, it is baked in a thin layer at high temperature until golden. It is best enjoyed hot from the oven with a little ground pepper.
